Information for Graduates

Crisler Center doors open at 2:30pm. Graduates will enter through the north tunnel of Crisler Center and make their way to the arena floor. Seating will be by degree program and section. Ushers will be available to assist graduates in locating their seating areas.

Graduates must be seated by 3:15pm and are asked to take care of any restroom needs prior, as to avoid disruption. The name reader card on the graduate's seat should be filled out prior to proceeding to the stage for recognition.

All graduates are required to stay for the entire ceremony (lasting about 2 - 2 1/2 hours) and shall wait for the appropriate cue from ushers to leave following the platform party recessional. 

Please arrange to meet your guests at a location outside of Crisler Center, as there is another commencement to follow. Only graduates and platform party are permitted on the arena floor.

Attire

Academic attire is required for all participating graduates.

Bachelor's and Master's Academic attire can be ordered beginning in January 2017 through Herff Jones at www.herffjones.com/college/ross.

Attire can also be purchased at the following two local bookstores, but may be different from the attire purchased from Herff Jones:

There is no dress code for guests.


Checklist

Make sure your name is listed as you want it to appear in the official Commencement programs and on your transcript and that all your records (transcripts, library books, school fees, etc.) are current.

You will receive an email from the Ross Registrar's Office with the deadlines for submitting your name for the official Commencement programs in January 2017; please note that if you do not submit by that deadline your name will not be listed in the Commencement programs. This does not mean you will not be eligible to graduate.

Make sure the address you have on file for receipt of your diploma and other papers is current.

Verify important graduation details such as location, dress code, and time of arrival for ceremony.

Select the clothes and shoes you will wear with your cap and gown. High heels are not recommended.

Try on your cap and gown. Remove wrinkles according to instructions and hang the gown up until graduation.

The cap tassel is worn to the right; switch it to the left after crossing the stage.

Pin your hood if necessary so that it does not slip during the ceremony.

Agree on a place to meet your family and friends outside the building after the ceremony.


Diplomas

Bachelor's and Master's Degree recipients, diplomas will be mailed by the University's Office of the Registrar at the end of June to the diploma address you have specified on the Graduation Application page on Wolverine Access.

Doctoral degree recipients attending the University Graduate Exercises will be hooded and receive their diplomas at the ceremony. Additional information regarding University Graduate Exercises can be found on U-M's commencement site. If you do not attend, please contact Kelsey Belzak for more information.


Eligibility for Graduation Ceremonies

Who is Eligible?

All graduates and candidates of the Winter Term 2017, Spring/Summer Term 2017, or Fall Term 2016 (who did not participate in April 2016 ceremony), may participate.

Graduation Application Process

  1. Log on to Wolverine Access
  2. Click “Student Center” then click the drop-down arrow in the “Other Academic…” field.
  3. Select “Apply for Graduation” and follow the instructions on the screen carefully. 
  4. You will receive an automated e-mail confirmation after you have successfully applied for graduation.

International Students

The University of Michigan will provide a letter of invitation to assist graduates whose parents must apply for a visa in order to attend the commencement ceremony.

Note: it can take up to four weeks for the University to process a letter of invitation.

Announcement cards and other commencement accessories can be ordered at www.herffjones.com/college/ross.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Professional photos will be taken of each graduate as he or she shakes hands with the Dean on stage, and again as each graduate exits the stage.

You are not obligated to purchase any of these photos.

Taking photos at the stage by friends or family during the ceremony is not permitted.
