I-20: Becoming a Ross Graduate Student in the U.S.

Start Here

The I-20 form certifies that you are legally enrolled in a program of study at the U-M Ross School of Business, and it must be issued by the U-M International Center.

To obtain an I-20, you must show you have a minimum amount of funding available to you during your study period at U-M. Your Ross Admissions Assistant will provide details about the items required to obtain a Form I-20. The following is a general description of the steps:

  1. Set up your U-M uniqname/email account by following the instructions in the U-M IT Services email that you will automatically receive after paying your enrollment deposit. All I-20 information will be communicated to you via your umich.edu email account (on the Google platform) so please ensure you are checking this inbox regularly.
  2. Set up your U-M Dropbox account with your U-M email address.
  3. Open the email invitation to collaborate on your I-20 folder in U-M Dropbox.
    • Invitations will be sent in mid-winter for programs beginning in spring, summer, and fall terms.
    • Invitations will be sent in late summer to students beginning programs in the winter term.
  4. Review the Welcome Letter and all other documents (Next Steps Form, Financial Support Information, Sample Funding Documents, Affidavit Form) in your I-20 U-M Dropbox folder.
  5. Complete the Next Steps Form. Enter information for yourself, and, if applicable,  your spouse, and dependents who will accompany you to the U.S., listing yourself first.
  6. Upload a clear and complete image of your passport photo page. If applicable, include passports for your spouse and dependents.
  7. If applicable, upload a copy of your current I-20/DS-2019, current I-94, and visa, if you are currently in the U.S. on an F1 or J1 visa.
  8. Review the Proof of Funding uploaded by Ross Admissions after you have completed the previous steps. This document is your estimated cost of attendance. The Estimated I-20 Expenses by Program table below includes tuition and fees, living expenses, books, supplies, insurance, and dependent expenses, if applicable.
    • F-1 students must show financial support documentation for 12 months of study while living in the U.S.
