Michigan Ross Will Change Your Life

Share

Business school is a big decision. It is an investment of time, talent, money, and energy.  As you can imagine, I am a proponent of business education and of higher education in general. It is a transformative experience that can elevate your life in a way that few other experiences can.

I realize that in choosing where to go to business school there are a lot of things to weigh, and a lot of questions to answer. Students may be wondering about everything from who will be in their classes, to what our faculty are like, to what are the best restaurants in Ann Arbor?

As we prepare to welcome our new MBA admits this week at Go Blue Rendezvous, my message to them, and to all future Ross students, is that this school will change your life. Choosing Ross will be one of the best decisions you'll ever make, and here are my thoughts on a few reasons why:

The Big Picture

At Ross you will experience firsthand that business can be a force for good. Our mission to develop leaders who make a positive difference in the world drives our students to realize that it is not only possible, but desirable, to make profits and have a purpose. Here you will learn that positive business means creating value – for shareholders, employees, and society. You'll learn how to lead organizations and manage employees in a way that energizes, inspires, and has a positive impact on the bottom line. So whichever direction your career takes, from consulting to marketing to private equity to entrepreneurship, your time at Ross will prepare you to make a positive difference.

Leadership Excellence

There is a reason why the companies that everyone wants to work for are some of the top recruiters at Ross. Our school is known for leadership development, meaning we are best equipped to teach students how to lead through every opportunity and any crisis, starting day one on the job. Our reputation for leadership was further enhanced recently when Stephen and Karen Sanger donated $20 million to Ross to create the Sanger Leadership Center. Ross is the only business school to offer every student significant, research-based leadership development experiences each semester. We've already heard from recruiters that the Sanger Leadership Center is a significant plus for Ross and our graduates.

Empowered to Take Action

Ross has a strong tradition of students who take the ball and run with it (this is not a football pun). Just consider our 75-plus student clubs, all of which are initiated, organized, and run by students. Ross students have conceptualized and built some of the most impressive conferences held at Ross each year, such as the Asia Business Conference, Black Business Students Association Conference, Entrepalooza (our annual entrepreneurship symposium), India Business Conference, Marketing Symposium, Revitalization and Business Conference, and Women in Leadership Conference. Our students lead sections, mentor other students, volunteer at community groups, and start and grow their own businesses while still on campus.

Ross faculty, some of the most respected thought leaders in business education, bring this action-focused learning approach to life in the classroom and beyond. You’ll experience it as you work on one of our Multidisciplinary Action Projects (MAP), as you help manage a student-led venture fund, as you participate in a national case competition, or as you immerse yourself in an overseas business culture.

A Network for Life

The minute you walk into the Winter Garden, you will feel the energy and spirit of the Ross community. The bonds you make here are going to open doors for you at every point in your life, from your personal connections to your business relationships. Those bonds are forged starting your first day of the Impact Challenge; grow as you and your section work on projects; strengthen through seminal experiences, such as MAP; and by Commencement, will be unbreakable. This experience gives you a global network of more than 46,000 Ross graduates (and more than half a million U-M graduates) at companies and organizations in every major city in the world.

The Big Block M

Ross sits at the heart of the University of Michigan's central campus. Truly one of the greatest universities in the world, U-M is a place of prestige, power, and purpose. Each day you will be surrounded, in class and elsewhere on campus, by intelligent, passionate, and driven individuals studying art, engineering, the environment, law, literature, medicine, public health, public policy – the list goes on and on. The fact that the university is home to more than 100 graduate programs that are among the top 10 in their fields ensures that the exchange of ideas is equally as impressive as the school's famed athletics. That mix of intellectual inspiration helps ensure a boundaryless way of thinking that will be highly valued in the workplace.

I anticipate an impressive group of admitted students at Go Blue Rendezvous this week and am happy that so many are joining us. I will be there to share my thoughts in person, and I wish everyone safe travels to Ann Arbor.

Remember, this place will change your life, and we look forward to welcoming you to Michigan Ross.
