Amiyatosh Purnanandam is the Michael Stark Professor of Finance and Chair of Finance at Ross. His recent research is related to banking, the subprime crisis, and mortgage finance - analyzing the causes and consequences of the financial crisis, measurement and reporting of risk in the banking sector, design of mortgage-backed-securities, and incentive issues in securitization markets.

Joseph Giles

From Wall Street to Running a Company: Life Lessons Key to Success

In his talk, Joseph Giles discussed the key learnings and practical considerations from working on Wall Street and running a PE-backed business in healthcare. Joseph is the President & CEO of Midwest Vision Partners, where he is responsible for leading MVP’s culture, growth strategy, and relationships with its physician partners. Prior to leading MVP, Joseph was the President and COO of Athletico, the third-largest physical therapy group in the US and before that, he held director level positions in private equity as well as in investment banking. Joseph holds MBA, JD and BBA degrees from the University of Michigan and serves on the boards of Florida Autism Center and Summit Dermatology Partners.

Scott Hamerink

Scott Hamerink discussed the impacts across FinTech including trends and opportunities, as well as his career path and experiences. Scott leads strategy and consultation as an Associate Partner in IBM’s Enterprise Strategy (ES&iX) group. He leads advisory for business, digital transformation, and Fintech investments across Global Financial Services clients in this role. Before IBM, Scott led enterprise transformation efforts at Comerica Bank. A seasoned executive and entrepreneur, he has over 20 years of experience working across large organizations and startups. He received his MBA from The University of Michigan, Ross School of Business.

Andrew Wu

"Demystifying Blockchain Technologies: Seeing Beyond the Buzz"

Andrew Wu talked about the blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. Andrew is an Assistant Professor of Technology and Operations and Finance and the Faculty Co-Director of Michigan Ross Fintech Initiative. He conducts extensive research and industry collaboration in FinTech, particularly in blockchain, cryptocurrencies and robo-advisors. His research also develops and applies machine learning and automated textual analysis methods to extract and quantify new financial and operating information from large-scale unstructured data.

Larry Halperin discussed the basics of distressed investing, the investment process, and the structure of the industry.  Larry is a partner in Chapman and Cutler LLP’s Bankruptcy and Restructuring Group, and Co-Office Leader of the firm's New York office. Larry focuses his practice on financial restructuring of distressed companies, high yield and distressed debt transactions, commercial lending transactions, and mergers and acquisitions. Larry received his B.B.A. from the University of Michigan and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

"SPAC's - An innovative financial instrument to take high growth companies public"

Rajeev Nair is the CFO of McLaren Technology Acquisition Corp, a SPAC focused on companies in FinTech, AI and Financial Services sector, globally. In the past, he worked in the CFO's role at UST Global and provided strategic direction to the management team, building UST Global to over $1 billion+ in valuation and leading the company's technology footprint expansion with investments in AI, Analytics and Digital companies. He has also led the Predictive Modeling and AI team for CreditOne Bank, a large credit card issuer in the USA with 16 million accounts. In his lecture, Rajeev offered his insights and perspectives as the CFO of a SPAC and discussed why he considers SPAC's a smart instrument to take high growth, global companies public.

Clayton Miller is a partner at Stone Arch Capital, with over 30 years of private equity investing and legal experience. He co-founded Stone Arch Capital and over the past 17 years has been actively involved in all aspects of Stone Arch Capital's capital raising and investment efforts. Clay is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Northwestern University School of Law, and Harvard University. His talk covered a summary of the fundamentals of private equity and particularly middle market private equity, including a discussion of the key elements of the private equity model, recent challenges, and the state of the private equity market.
