For Leadership on Diversity Issues, Google, Uber, McKinsey and More Turn To Michigan Alums

You can always find Michigan Ross alumni at the forefront of business. And the Michigan Ross alumni leading efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace are definitely at the forefront of the next wave changing the face of the corporate world.

Currently, at some of the world’s largest and most notable companies, Ross alumni serve as executives responsible for policies and operations that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The responsibilities they have for cultivating inclusive environments, building diverse teams, and developing equitable business practices are relatively new in the business world, but growing fast. Gartner predicts that by the end of 2019, 90 percent of large companies will have chief executives responsible for managing these initiatives.  

Leading the way towards that future are these Michigan Ross alumni:

Danielle Mastrangel Brown, MBA '08
VP Employee Engagement and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Google

Danielle Mastrangel Brown leads Google’s People Operations team, where she focuses on employee hiring, engagement, and retention, and aims to ensure Google’s workforce represents the global community it serves.

Prior to working at Google, Brown served as Chief Diversity Officer at Intel, where she led Intel’s Network of Executive Women and developed a pipeline of female leadership within the company. Brown has also participated as a speaker at the Michigan Ross Positive Business Conference.

Chris Genteel, MBA '08, is also working on diversity and inclusion efforts at Google. He serves as the tech giant’s Director of Community & Business Inclusion, working to create a more inclusive and equitable culture for employees and the businesses Google serves.


Ellis Griffith, MBA '99
Chief Diversity Officer, McKinsey & Company

Ellis Griffith leads global inclusion and diversity initiatives at McKinsey & Company as the company’s Chief Diversity Officer. Prior to McKinsey & Company, Griffith worked as the Chief Talent Officer at the American Cancer Society and led Talent Management at The Coca-Cola Company. This year Griffith also participated as a panelist at the first-ever MBA Summit hosted at Michigan Ross in partnership with Poets&Quants.


Bo Young Lee, BBA '97
Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Uber

Bo Young Lee serves as Uber’s very first Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. In this inaugural role at Uber, she’s responsible for transforming the culture of the popular ride-sharing company in an effort to, as Uber notes, “build a work culture where radically diverse and inclusive teams drive innovation, accelerate growth, and build a work culture and systems where all employees have the opportunity to excel and grow to their highest potential.”

Lee came to Uber after serving as Global Diversity & Inclusion Officer for Marsh & McLennan Companies.


Tamika Curry Smith, BBA '95
VP of Diversity & Inclusion, Nike

As Vice President of Global Diversity and Inclusion at Nike, Tamika Curry Smith influences corporate policies that impact the company’s approximately 73,000 employees worldwide. Smith’s previous roles include Director of Diversity at Target and Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Mercedes Benz.

Earlier this year, Smith was also named to The Network Journal’s list of the Top 25 Influential Black Women in Business. Smith also serves on the Michigan Ross Alumni Board of Governors.

Alums from programs across the University of Michigan also hold diversity, equity, and inclusion roles at major companies, including:

  • Elizabeth Campbell, Michigan Law '78, Diversity and Inclusion Director at Campbell Soup; and,
  • Brian Johnson, BS, IOE '02, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer at Fiat Chrysler.
