No Victory Without Optimism: Advancing Climate Action in 2019 and Beyond
The 2019 Wege Lecture will take place on March 14 at 5 p.m. in Hill Auditorium. The lecture honors the late business leader Peter M. Wege for his belief in the power of sustainability and his numerous contributions to the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems. The event is free and open to the public.
Figueres, an internationally renowned advocate for climate change, was at the United Nations from 2010-2016, where she steered the international climate change negotiations that led to the Paris Agreement.
Trained as an anthropologist, Figueres gained an enduring respect for the environment during her childhood in Costa Rica, where her father served three terms as president and her mother was a diplomat. Her advocacy for climate change grew as she experienced changes in Costa Rica’s ecosystem.
In her current position, Figueres is the convenor of Mission 2020, an initiative that fosters “radical collaboration” among businesses, non-governmental organizations, universities, local and state governments, and communities to address the threat of global climate change.
The Wege Lecture is sponsored in part by the Erb Institute and speaks to the many sustainability challenges facing society in the 21st century.
For two decades, the Erb Institute, a partnership between the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and the University of Michigan School for the Environment and Sustainability, has sponsored events with global thought leaders, like Figueres, who share Erb’s mission, “To create a better world by harnessing the combined power of business and science to drive positive, sustainable social and environmental change.”
Through research, teaching, and engagement, the Erb Institute is focused on preparing and supporting bold business leaders who can adeptly transform companies, industries, and entire economies for systemic sustainability.
