CPA Exam

MAcc students are not required to pursue Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, but if becoming a CPA is one of your goals, our program provides the solid academic foundation necessary to be successful. The CPA exam is composed of four sections:

  • AUD — Audit and Attestation
  • BEC — Business Environment and Concepts
  • FAR — Financial Accounting and Reporting
  • REG — Regulation

Early research on the education requirements mandated by the state where you intend to practice will allow you to plan your elective study to meet their specific conditions. The MAcc program will work with you to meet state requirements, but each State Board of Accountancy makes the final determination on whether or not you are eligible to sit for the exam.

CPA candidates at the University of Michigan have pass rates much higher than the national average, and in 2012 the state of Michigan was ranked No. 4 in the country for success rate on the CPA exam. Additionally, several MAcc alumni have received the prestigious AICPA Elijah Watt Sells Award, an honor given to candidates who obtain a cumulative average score above 95.50 across all four sections of the CPA exam within one year on their first attempt.

2012 CPA Exam Pass Rates

  AUD BEC FAR REG
National 46.9 52.8 48.0 48.2
U-M 71.4 94.6 81.1 79.5

Learn more about the CPA exam by visiting the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy website and the American Institute of CPAs’ (AICPA) This Way to CPA.
