I-20: The First Step to Becoming a Student in the U.S.
Frequently Asked Questions about the I-20 Form*
After you get the great news that you have been admitted to Ross, and after you officially join the program, you must obtain the SEVIS Certificate of Eligibility (I-20, for short). The I-20 enables you to apply for a student visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
What is SEVIS?
SEVIS stands for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, an Internet-based program that maintains data on foreign students and exchange visitors before and during their stay in the United States. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) administers SEVIS. While in the United States, every international visitor comes under the authority of DHS, the federal agency that ensures compliance with U.S. law and regulations.
How do I get an I-20?
The Ross MBA Admissions Office will provide details about required items, including a copy of the passport photo page for you and any dependents coming with you.
What happens next?
The Ross MBA Admissions Office will verify your documents’ completeness and accuracy, prepare the I-20 request form, and forward all required documents to the University of Michigan’s International Center. The International Center will formally request the I-20 on your behalf from the U.S. government. Upon approval, the government will notify the International Center, whose staff will print and sign the form and forward it to the Ross Admissions Office. You will be asked to submit e-ship details for express mail delivery service so your I-20 reaches you as soon as possible. If you have questions about the time frame of your I-20 issuance, contact the Ross Admissions Office.
Any tips to help the process go smoothly?
-
Complete all requests from the Ross Admissions Office as quickly as possible.
-
Remember that errors cause delays — provide accurate information the first time.
-
Ensure that your name as shown on your passport exactly matches the name on your I-20.
-
Maintain a permanent address in your home country.
-
Keep your address, email address, and telephone number up to date in iMpact and Wolverine Access.
-
Be patient — Ross staff have no control over your documents when they are with the government or the International Center.
After you send me my I-20, what do I need to do?
You will find instructions attached to your I-20 explaining the procedures you must follow to obtain a visa and enter the United States. Read these instructions carefully. After receiving the I-20, most international students need to ensure they have their passport and visa to be eligible to enter the United States. International Center staff are prepared to assist you with your specific questions and unique situations. Visit the International Center website or email [email protected].
Can I come to the U.S. before classes start?
As an initial-entry international student, you may enter the United States 30 days prior to the start date on your I-20 or DS-2019 form. Rules vary for returning students.
I have been studying in the U.S. already and have an I-20 from my other school. I am all set … right? Wrong. Even if you have attended another school in the United States immediately before coming to Ross, you must obtain a new I-20 from U-M. Inform your admissions assistant of your current status so he/she can begin this process in coordination with your most recently attended school.
I have a question you did not address here. How can I contact my Ross admissions assistant?

* Federal regulations may change. Please confirm all SEVIS-related details with the International Center.
