Business Minor students at round table

Discover the Benefits of Business.

Students on any career track can benefit from a background in business. That’s why applicants with many different majors — from all schools and colleges — pursue the Business Minor. Your application helps us assess your fit and learn more about why you’re interested in the program.

You must have junior standing (55 CTP +) completed by the end of the winter term in the year you apply. Our application is available online in the winter term and is due March 31. If you’re accepted to the program, you can begin the Business Minor in the fall. We’re excited to welcome students from across campus. You can learn more about criteria below and on our How to Apply page.

What Makes a Strong Applicant?
Outstanding Academics

We’re looking for students with academic records that showcase good grades and challenging coursework. In other words, you’ve put in the effort and have the grades to show for it. The number of credit/no-credit courses you’ve completed is also taken into account. (We encourage keeping them to a minimum.) In the case of pass/fail courses, know that we have access to the letter grade earned and will consider that when reviewing your application.

Compelling Application Essays

Essays are your opportunity to set yourself apart from other applicants by sharing more about your interests and unique qualities. We look for applicants who answer them with specific examples and ample detail:

  • Why are you applying to the Business Minor? Considering your own interests and passions, what led you to conclude that the Business Minor combined with your current major is the optimal educational path for you? (300-500 words)

  • Please introduce yourself to your future Ross classmates. (100-150 words)
Quality Extracurricular Experiences

In business, drive and passion are essential. That’s why students who demonstrate these qualities through extracurricular activities typically do well in our Business Minor program. Note that your extracurricular experiences do not have to be related to business.

 We look for students who:

  • Pursue ways to take initiative or responsibility, whether or not they have a formal leadership position.

  • Demonstrate commitment over time. We’re interested in quality over quantity.

  • Showcase strong involvement while at U-M. We consider and give priority to these activities.
