Your Application Checklist:

The Michigan Ross Executive MBA program is designed for accomplished leaders with rich work experience and demonstrated career progression. Successful applicants typically have at least eight years of work experience and are fully employed at the time of application and throughout the program.

Your resume provides us with insights into who you are, your achievements, and your work experience. Don't forget that your resume is a comprehensive list of all your professional and educational experiences to date. Make sure to include all the details: relevant dates, employer titles, and degrees.

Be sure to include any Executive Education or other professional certificates, such as the Michigan Ross Executive Education Accelerated Management Development Certificate Program, as they will enhance your application.

Michigan Ross uses the GMAC Common Recommendation Form, and we require only one recommendation. Select a recommender who can discuss your professional performance and work style; a current or former supervisor is ideal. Your recommender should be able to answer the following questions:

Please provide a brief description of your interaction with the applicant and, if applicable, their role in your organization. (50 words)

How does the performance of the applicant compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles (e.g., what are the applicant's strengths)? (500 words)

Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (500 words)

Write an essay for each of the following questions (maximum 400 words each)

  • At Michigan Ross School of Business, we believe in learning by doing. Our action-based learning approach encourages students to apply knowledge to solve real-world challenges, creating meaningful impact beyond the classroom.

Describe a time when you applied knowledge—whether from formal education, personal study, mentorship, or experience—to solve a specific professional challenge.

What was the situation, what actions did you take, and what did you learn about yourself as a leader?

  • Adopted by thousands of businesses and leaders around the world, and recognized by the Financial Times as one of the 40 most important management frameworks in history, the Michigan Model of Leadership underlies all leadership research and teaching at Michigan Ross. Please describe your personal leadership goals and how the Michigan Model of Leadership and the EMBA leadership development curriculum will help in the achievement of those goals.
  • Optional Statement
(This might be an opportunity to elaborate on your skills, describe your experiences, or tell us why joining the Michigan Ross EMBA program is important to you.)

Note: If you use Artificial Intelligence (AI) software in the creation of your essay answers, you are required to use the APA in-text citation "Personal Communication." Rule: (Communicator, personal communication, Month Date, Year), example: (OpenAI, personal communication, September 1, 2024).

You must have a U.S. bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, or the international equivalent, by the time of application. You can submit an unofficial copy of all of your undergraduate and graduate transcripts (and degree documents, if applicable) with your application, but official transcripts must be submitted prior to the first day of class for enrolled students. Your transcripts should include transfer credits applied to your degree. Also, make sure to submit transcripts that show other relevant coursework, even if not applied toward a degree.

Unopened, hard copy official transcripts can be sent to the following address:

Office of the Executive MBA Program
Stephen M. Ross School of Business
University of Michigan
700 East University, Kresge Hall K1521
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1234

Electronic transcripts can be sent directly from the degree-granting institution to [email protected].

It is critical that your employer is in full support of your attendance in the program. Help your employer understand the program and its organizational benefits by sharing this guide to sponsoring an EMBA student. Your supervisor or human resources representative is required to complete the statement of corporate support. Please submit this form to the EMBA Admissions Office before the first day of class.

Admissions interviews are conducted by one or two members of the admissions committee and may take place once an on-line application has been started. Request an interview by sending a copy of your resume to the EMBA Admissions Office at [email protected]. A member of our admissions team will contact you to schedule your interview.

Standardized Tests

We don’t require standardized tests like the GMAT or Executive Assessment (EA), but we do accept them as a data point to make sure you have the quantitative and analytical skills to be successful in the program. We’ll review your transcripts and your work experience and discuss options with you if it looks like you might need some support in these areas.

English-Language Testing

English doesn't have to be your first language, but it's important that you have a high level of proficiency in the English language. Language skills are assessed throughout the application process and are considered in your overall evaluation. You may be asked to demonstrate fluency by taking the TOEFL or PTE exam.

The non-refundable $200 application fee is waived for:

Active members and veterans of the U.S Military - please upload a copy of military orders or a DD-214 on the Additional Information page of the online application.

Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, or Teach for America volunteers who have served within the past five years - please upload proof of membership that includes the name of the organization and dates of service on the Additional Information page of the online application.

Currently enrolled students in a University of Michigan graduate degree program

Citizens of a country on the UN's list of least-developed countries - verified at time of application.

Students who submitted an application to the Ross Executive MBA within the past five years.

We do not waive application fees for any other reason.

Additional Things You Should Know

Student Visas
Most international EMBA students are fully employed and can therefore secure work visas sponsored by their employers. Please note that international students requiring F-1 or J-1 immigration status to study in the United States are currently not eligible to enroll at the Los Angeles campus and must select the Ann Arbor campus instead.

Visit the University of Michigan International Center for more information relevant to international students.

TOEFL Exam
You are required to have a high level of proficiency in the English language. Language skills are assessed throughout the application process and are considered in an applicant's overall evaluation. Based on the evaluation, certain candidates may be asked to take the TOEFL exam as a condition of their admission.

Students who are asked to take the TOEFL exam as a condition of their admission should score 100 or above on the internet-based test (iBT). The Michigan Ross TOEFL score reporting code is 1839. Ross will also accept the PTE or IELTS as an alternative to the TOEFL, and strongly recommends a PTE score of 70 or higher, or an IELTS exam score of 7 or higher.

International Application Deadlines
International students can apply at any point before the final deadline. However, if you anticipate that your visa processing may take longer than usual, we encourage you to prepare in advance and submit your application as early as possible to ensure you have sufficient time for visa arrangements.

Application Fee Waivers
