Kate Lyons
As a dual MBA/MPP candidate, I am passionate about blending my background in policy + social impact with the language and tools needed to effectively strategize across the public and private sectors. I've always been interested in systems and service networks that support well-being for children and families. Prior to Ross, I spent several years working in Washington DC for a range of nonprofits which focused on K-12 education and child policy. I've been a project manager for state education agency clients at a public sector-aligned organization, conducted research on program outcomes, and explored the landscape of public and foundation-based grant funding.
When I first came to the University of Michigan in 2024 to start a master's program in public policy, business school wasn't on my radar. However, I was immediately attracted to U-M for its combination of depth and well-roundedness, as a world-class university with excellence across a wide range of disciplines. Being back in school full-time provided more time to continue reflecting on and refining my career goals, and my conversations with mentors all pointed me towards Ross. I got to know the collaborative Ross community and knew that I wanted to be part of it, and I'm continually excited by the opportunities Ross provides for action-based learning.
Outside of work, you will likely find me at a coffeehouse for hours on end, exploring nearby breweries, or trying new soup recipes. Feel free to reach out if you're considering whether an MBA is right for you, want to learn more about Ross, or are curious about life in Ann Arbor! Current Ross students were an invaluable resource for me throughout the application process.
