The Tata group comprises over 100 operating companies in seven business sectors: communications and information technology, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals.

The group has operations in more than 100 countries across six continents, exporting products and services to over 150 countries. Every Tata company or enterprise operates independently. Each of these companies has its own board of directors and shareholders, to whom it is answerable.

There are 31 publicly listed Tata enterprises and they have a combined market capitalization of about $124.9 billion (as of 6/4/15), and a shareholder base of 3.9 million. The major Tata companies are Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Teleservices, Titan, Tata Communications, and Indian Hotels.

Ross School of Business Engagement

Since 2005, Ross has partnered with Tata to provide leadership training to more than 800 participants in 25 program deliveries. Led by Professor M.S. Krishnan, the nine-day course for senior executives develops leadership skills through the following competencies: strategy, co-creating value with customers and others, financial management, business innovation and information technology, human resource management, and leadership.

The Tata program also entails the formation of action learning projects that evolve to be implemented within the respective company. This program - offered in India, Europe, and the United States - is not about incremental change, but rather one that equips participants with the perspectives and tools to craft and execute a transformational global agenda.

One reason I think the program will have a long life is that the faculty are restless and determined to be better than last time. They are so passionate and have a powerful connection with the people in the room.
