Q&A with Admissions Officers: Common Questions Answered
Every year, Michigan Ross admissions teams answer hundreds of questions from prospective Part-Time MBA students. We’re always excited to help you put your best self forward. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive:
What makes a strong application for a Ross Part-Time MBA?
We’re looking for applicants who bring a strong academic history, valuable professional experience, and a clear sense of purpose for pursuing their MBA. The most compelling applications show authenticity, share your achievements, what you’ve learned, and how you hope to grow during your time at Ross. Help us understand why Ross is the right fit for you, and how you’ll make a positive impact on our community. There’s no single component that guarantees admission into the program; our admissions committee reviews every application holistically, taking into consideration each aspect of materials submitted.
How much work experience is needed to be considered for the programs?
The Ross Part-Time MBA Programs require applicants to hold an undergraduate degree by the time they apply. On average, applicants have seven years of full-time work experience post undergrad, but we consider a range of backgrounds and industries. What matters most is the quality of your experience, not just the number of years. Be sure to articulate your career progress and the impact you’ve had in your role.
Does the admissions committee prefer the GMAT Focus/GRE or the Ross Quantitative Readiness Course?
We don’t prefer one over the other. You can choose whichever option best demonstrates your ability to handle the program’s quantitative demands. The GMAT Focus and GRE can outline quantitative skills in detail, while the Quantitative Readiness Course is a good refresher and offers flexibility beyond a standardized test. Both are equally accepted, so pick the one that works best for you.
Can I apply to a Part-Time MBA Program if I don’t have a business background?
Absolutely! Many of our students come from non-business and non-traditional backgrounds. We value diverse experiences and perspectives. Our program is designed to equip you with the fundamental business skills you'll need to succeed, regardless of your undergraduate major or career path so far. When you understand the deeper reason behind your MBA, you bring clarity and motivation that can make a non-traditional background an asset.
Can I visit campus or connect with students?
Yes! We strongly encourage prospective students to attend an information session, participate in class visits, or chat with current students and alumni. These experiences provide an invaluable perspective on the community and what life at Ross is like!
