Which Online MBA Start Date Should You Apply To?
The Michigan Ross Online MBA offers two opportunities each year to start your degree: January (Winter) and late August (Fall). Some applicants assume one intake is more competitive or offers a different experience, but the reality is much simpler. Both cohorts earn the same Michigan Ross MBA, learn from the same world-class faculty, and have the same opportunities to build meaningful connections with classmates and professors.
With the early application for the January 2027 start right around the corner, let's clear up a few misconceptions we hear.
Myth #1: "The winter cohort is easier to get into."
False.
Our admissions process is holistic, regardless of which intake you choose. We evaluate every applicant based on the strength of their overall application, not the semester they're applying for.
There isn't a "less competitive" intake or a hidden advantage to applying in January vs. August. We encourage you to apply when you feel you can submit your strongest application.
If taking a few extra months gives you time to strengthen your essays, prepare for a standardized test, or better express your career goals, that may be the right choice. If you're ready now, there's no reason to wait.
Myth #2: "The fall cohort has more resources or opportunities."
Also false.
Whether you start in January or August, you'll have access to the same faculty, academic support, career resources, and the Michigan Ross network.
Your classmates may begin at a different time of year, but they'll be just as engaged, collaborative, and eager to learn from one another. That's a big part of the Ross experience!
Myth #3: "The winter experience isn't as good."
Definitely false.
Because many academic programs traditionally begin in the fall, some prospective students wonder if starting in January feels different.
It doesn't.
Students beginning in the winter semester have the same opportunities to connect with classmates, engage with faculty, and become part of the Michigan Ross community from day one. Many students even prefer a January start because it aligns well with a new year, new goals, and a fresh start.
We hope this helps answer some of the misconceptions about our January and late August Online MBA start dates.
Ultimately, there isn't a right or wrong choice, only the one that's right for you. Choose the start date that best aligns with your personal needs and professional goals. The feedback I most often hear from students and graduates is that there is never a perfect time to start, but the best time to start is now. So, if you feel ready to take that next step, you don’t have to wait until the fall 2027 to get started, the winter 2027 start is available.
Whenever that is, we look forward to learning more about you and your MBA goals!
