In the 2024-25 Chicago Quantitative Alliance Investment Challenge, our Ross School of Business team navigated one of the most uncertain market environments in recent memory.

Between election-year volatility, sticky inflation, and recession fears, markets were unpredictable. Yet by sticking to our disciplined strategy of high-conviction trades and rigorous risk management, we delivered the highest return in the competition at a +11.41% return, more than doubling the average team’s return (~+5%) and securing second place overall. For context, the S&P 500 declined around 4.6% during the same period. In this blog, we reflect on our strategy, top investments, and the lessons learned along the way.

Personal Growth and Lessons Learned

Participating in the CQA Challenge was a transformative experience for me. As I reflect on the journey, I realize how much I’ve grown, not just as an investor but as a teammate, a leader, and a lifelong learner. The challenge forced me to constantly confront ambiguity, question my assumptions, and adapt to new information. It reinforced the importance of humility: even when our investment thesis felt rock-solid, we reminded ourselves of the unpredictability of markets and the need to stay vigilant in managing risk.

From a career perspective, this experience gave me hands-on practice applying the frameworks and theories we study in the classroom to a real-world scenario. Courses such as Valuation (FIN 615), Capital Markets & Investment Strategy (FIN 608), and Financial Statement Analysis (ACC 711) gave me the technical foundation, but the competition taught me how to execute under pressure. It underscored the value of preparation, process, and intellectual honesty, qualities that I know will serve me well as I pursue a career in investment management or consulting.

Future Outlook and Advice to Peers

Looking ahead, I’m even more motivated to build a career where I can combine rigorous analytical skills with the adaptability and teamwork this competition demands. The thrill of tackling complex, high-stakes problems and collaborating with talented peers confirmed that this is the kind of work I want to do. My immediate goal is to pursue roles that challenge me to analyze markets and companies with both depth and discipline, whether in asset management, equity research, or strategic consulting.

To students or prospective participants considering the CQA Challenge or similar opportunities: I cannot recommend the experience highly enough. The challenge doesn’t just hone your technical skills; it also fosters resilience, teamwork, and intellectual curiosity. Start building your foundations early, look for teammates who complement your strengths, and approach every new idea with humility and openness. Most importantly, be patient with yourself: the markets will test you, and every setback is an opportunity to learn.
