Career Background

Smitha Hahn is the SVP - Director of Tax at United Wholesale Mortgage. She has responsibility for managing the strategy, compliance and provision related to all federal, state and local taxes for the company and its affiliates, including managing the company’s Up-C structure. In addition, she is responsible for the company’s treasury and financial planning and analysis groups, with a focus on the company’s liquidity.

Prior to joining UWM, Smitha was a tax partner with Ernst & Young in Detroit. She has over 20 years of public accounting experience and was responsible for the management and implementation of indirect tax projects and services for her clients. She also previously served as the National Tax Accounting Leader for Indirect/State and Local Tax for four years and the Michigan Tax Desk for the firm for five years.

During her public accounting career, Smitha served a diverse client base and has significant experience in the state income/franchise tax area, focusing on business-aligned restructurings, merger and acquisition structuring, review and analysis of the state tax implications of proposed business reorganizations, analysis of state tax filings for refunds and prospective favorable filing positions, and representation of clients before administrative boards in state tax controversies. Smitha has managed state-focused bankruptcy projects at five Fortune 500 companies, focusing on state attribute preservation. In addition, she has extensive ASC 740 state tax provision calculation, review and remediation experience.

Prior to joining Ernst & Young in 2002, Smitha spent almost two years with another public accounting firm in Chicago where she specialized in federal tax planning for the middle-market business sector, as well as family wealth planning.

Smitha is a member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and is a certified public accountant licensed in the state of Michigan. She has served as a speaker on state tax issues for seminars sponsored by the Tax Executives Institute, Council on State Taxation, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, Insurance Accounting and Systems Association, Michigan Women’s Tax Association and Strafford Publications. Smitha has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Michigan and a Master of Accounting from the University of Michigan Business School.

Smitha and her husband Michael (also a UM grad) reside in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan with their son and daughter.
