U-M International Student Health Insurance Plan
The University of Michigan requires all international students to enroll in the university’s International Student Health Insurance Plan immediately upon arrival in the U.S. unless comparable health insurance coverage from another source is provided. If your employer is paying for your health insurance, please be sure to share this information. To facilitate your enrollment in the university plan, a member of the International Center’s insurance office will be at our orientation/mandatory check-in upon arrival in the U.S. Coverage begins the first day of your program as indicated on your I-20; therefore, you are advised to secure travel insurance, if needed.
Students who would like to substitute other health insurance coverage must bring proof of coverage and a detailed description of the coverage to the insurance advisor at the International Center. If the alternative coverage does not meet the university requirements, the student will be required to purchase the university plan. View complete details.
The current International Student Health Insurance monthly premiums effective through Aug. 31, 2022 are:
Student only: $160.74 per month
Student and one dependent: $315.98 per month
Student and two or more dependents: $471.22 per month
New rates are negotiated each August, so there may be an increase in the premium while you are enrolled for the coverage.
