Biography

Since 1983, Janet Weiss has been on the Management and Organizations faculty of the Ross School, and jointly appointed with the Ford School of Public Policy.  She served as Associate Dean of the Ross School from 1992-1997.  From 2005-2015, she was Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Rackham Graduate School.   Before joining the Provost’s office, she was the founder and faculty director of the Nonprofit and Public Management Center at the University of Michigan, a collaborative effort of the Ross School and the schools of Public Policy, and Social Work. Her published research focuses on public management and public policy. She has done extensive research on the challenges of performance management in government, and the interplay between policy design and the management of public programs. Her work on education policy led to her participation in several national commissions on education reform.  More recently, she worked with the Performance Improvement Council of the federal government on the implementation of the Government Performance and Results Act, and the Program Management Improvement Accountability Act.  Her teaching and research are dedicated to the use of systematic evidence to improve the leadership and effectiveness of public and nonprofit organizations.
