Preparing students to succeed at the Ross School of Business and beyond is the goal of Ross Summer Connection, a program geared toward incoming first-year students seeking early exposure to the rigor and culture of Michigan Ross and the University of Michigan.

RSC introduces students to the academic learning community at Michigan Ross and helps ease the transition from high school to business school. Participants spend three to four weeks on campus in the summer taking Ross courses, engaging in community service, attending social and business events, networking with peers, and learning from mentors so that they are well prepared when fall classes begin.

For further insight into Ross Summer Connection, we asked two BBA students to share their experiences.

How did you learn of the Ross Summer Connection program?
I initially learned about the RSC program through an email I received from Ross. Eager to learn more, I reached out to upperclassmen on LinkedIn to hear about their experiences. The overwhelmingly positive feedback I received fueled my excitement to participate.

What do you feel are the biggest benefits of participating in the Ross Summer Connection program?
Without question, the most valuable aspect of participating in RSC was entering the school year with a built-in community of peers with whom I could study, brainstorm, and chat. This was complemented by an incredible group of upperclassmen who not only offered guidance as I navigated Ross but shared their personal experiences and challenges they faced as first-year students. Their openness in discussing what they had learned gave us the confidence to approach our own journey with greater insight and assurance.

Another invaluable benefit of RSC was the opportunity to familiarize myself with the campus before the fall semester began. I loved having the chance to explore different dining halls, walk through my class schedule, and discover study spots on campus. By the time the school year started in full swing, I had one less thing to worry about and could focus on academics and other priorities without the added stress of adjusting to a new environment.

What was your favorite experience while in Ross Summer Connection?
My favorite RSC experience was meeting Horace Tiggs, a partner at McKinsey & Co. For many of us, this was our first time attending a networking event, and we weren't quite sure what to expect. Horace's approachable and down-to-earth nature immediately put us at ease. It was a powerful reminder that no matter someone's professional stature, we're all human. Meaningful connections go beyond just career aspirations — they’re about getting to know the person beyond what they do.

While we did gain valuable insights into the consulting industry from Horace, what resonated most was his life philosophy. He shared a quote he had read, “The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.” As I journey into the next chapter of my life, I will remember to have perseverance and allow myself to learn from the challenges I face.

How do you think the Ross Summer Connection program has prepared you for your time at Ross and beyond?
RSC offered valuable insight into the vast array of resources available to me at Ross. Whether it was discovering the Kresge Library, learning about the support offered by the Career Development Office, or exploring opportunities through Ross Centers and Institutes, I gained a clear understanding of the tools at my disposal. More importantly, I now have the confidence to turn to the right people for guidance, whether I'm facing a challenge or seeking to explore a new opportunity. I loved the workshop on Google Calendar as a tool for scheduling meetings and classes, but also for personal well-being — whether that’s making time to hit the gym, connect with a friend from home, or simply recharge. This balance has been essential in helping me stay grounded and intentional amidst the busy pace of life at Ross.

What advice would you give to future students considering participating in the Ross Summer Connection program?
The advice that I would give to a prospective RSC participant is simple: you get out of it what you put into it. If you approach the program with curiosity and authenticity, people will want to help you and support you. Opportunities are abundant, but if you aren't finding exactly what you might be looking for, don't be afraid to create your own. Reach out to others; find like-minded individuals, and do something meaningful. It is very easy to get caught up in club recruitment and internship search, but remember that success isn't one-size-fits-all. Stay true to what resonates with you, and let that guide your choices. This network of support will be there to help you feel prepared and empowered to make the most of your time at Ross.

How did you learn about the Ross Summer Connection program?
I received an invitation to the Ross Summer Connection program without really knowing much about it. After researching a bit, I forwarded it to a friend who was already in Ross, and he strongly recommended the program. That’s when I decided to apply and submit my essays. I was thrilled at the chance to get acquainted with the Ross environment before the academic year and explore the professional development opportunities it offered. I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough time, but thankfully, everything worked out, and I’m really glad I took on the challenge and put myself out there.

What do you think are the biggest benefits of participating in the Ross Summer Connection program?
My friends have probably heard me talk about Ross Summer Connection nonstop. Before joining, I didn’t know much about Ross or U-M beyond what you learn from college applications. Getting on campus made me realize how vast the resources and opportunities are, which can be overwhelming. The program provided personalized support and helped me get used to both U-M and the campus itself.

I enjoyed the business communication programming and the various networking events. Without the program, I wouldn’t have known something as simple as how to get to my classes or where the best dining hall is. It also helped me tackle the rigorous math curriculum U-M offers. On a personal level, spending time with people from different backgrounds helped me understand the diverse culture at U-M, allowed me to build friendships, and taught me how to interact with others in a meaningful way.

What was your favorite experience during Ross Summer Connection?
My favorite experience was the Econ 101 intro class that took place every other day. It not only helped me refine my economics and statistics skills, but it also made me think in new ways. Harry, our PhD student instructor, was fantastic. He didn’t just teach us the course content — he helped us think critically and understand the debates within economics. Additionally, Professor Paul Horvath’s Michigan Math experience was another standout. He introduced us to tools like Exam Shops, which help students access past exams and practice problems. Thanks to Ross Summer Connection, I felt well prepared for the challenges of Michigan’s math courses, and I’ve been able to share what I’ve learned with my peers.

How do you think the Ross Summer Connection program has prepared you for your time at Ross and beyond?
The program really prepared me for what was ahead during the school year. Michigan is one of the top public universities for a reason — it’s tough! The Ross Summer Connection taught me the importance of managing time for myself, my studies, and my social life. I now see time differently, thanks to tools like Google Calendar. Also, the program’s peer tutoring and quantitative coaching during the school year are invaluable. These sessions are very personalized and allow you to ask questions you might hesitate to ask in class. For example, I learned how to simplify exponential formulas with my tutor, which has helped me a lot in my coursework.

What advice would you give to future students considering the Ross Summer Connection program?
Just go for it! Submit your application and write that essay. This program was key to my growth as a first-year at Ross. It gave me the confidence to apply to clubs at both Ross and the College of Engineering. Now, I serve on the board of those clubs because I took the initiative to learn and grow through the program.

My advice is to stay humble — everyone in the program is impressive, so leave your ego at the door. You’ll learn so much, meet great people, and get to experience opportunities that will benefit you long-term. The program opened doors for me that I never expected. Plus, even after the program ends, you can continue to engage in ASC events, which is something else to look forward to.
