Marjorie Williams, MBA '15
Marjorie Williams’ professional expertise has informed everything from U.S. strategic NATO initiatives to the production and/or exploitation of intellectual property related to TV shows such as Fear Factor, Master Chef, and South Park. Her legal career and service in the U.S. Air Force have taken her all over the world ― and to Michigan Ross.
Marjorie knew exactly what she wanted when she made the decision to pursue her business education. “It was important to me to go to a top school. The University of Michigan had the resources and the world-class education. The social aspect of Ross was also appealing ― they care about corporate responsibility, and that speaks to who I am as an individual.”
The business skills she picked up at Ross are extremely beneficial to Endemol Shine, where she serves as VP of Business and Legal Affairs. “Working in a corporate legal department, you need to be able to advise as to the legal risks and draft contracts to protect the business. I use many of the skills I learned at Ross to negotiate and structure deals. I have a better understanding of the financial provisions and can execute our strategy with confidence.”
An ExecMAP project with Amgen was a highlight for Marjorie. “MAP was really interesting. I worked in an entirely different industry establishing a marketing plan for a new biotechnology product in new territories. While hesitant to work in an unfamiliar field, I was attracted to the international component. It really challenged me to do something outside my experience while applying analytical tools we learned to develop strategies. It was invaluable.”
Marjorie’s career is definitely on the upswing. “Ross has benefited my career in obvious ways. In three years, I received two promotions (one while still at Viacom, and a second upon moving to Endemol). Even though my primary focus is in another discipline, people respect an MBA from U-M. It sets you apart.
“My boss was impressed that I was attending the Executive MBA program. He was really supportive, even though I was just starting a new job with more responsibilities. He saw it as a big value-add.”
