By Paul Kirsch

We recently introduced a new theme community for first-year Ross BBAs that will bring together like-minded students onto a single floor of a residence hall during their first-year on campus.

We’re very excited about what this new community can mean for the experience of our first-year students, and I wanted to share a little bit about why that is, and, if you are already an admitted Ross BBA, why I think you should consider applying to live there.

Why We’re Excited

Find Your Support Network Faster

This new Living Business Community is an opportunity for students to live in the same area as others who have similar interests. One goal of the new community will be to make the U-M campus feel smaller for our first-year students as they transition to college life. Because residents will share a floor of the West Quad & Cambridge House residence hall, they’ll be nearby and able to create a close-knit, supportive group that will be with them throughout their Ross career.

Meet Diverse People

Residents of the Living Business Community will also share a floor with the Multicultural Housing Community allowing students to strengthen connections with not only their Ross classmates, but students from across other U-M programs and backgrounds.

Dive Deep Into Your Passions

The experience we’re building in this community is designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the goals and values of a Michigan Ross education and connect like-minded students who share a passion for the power of positive business. Residents will participate in theme-specific programming and activities to help them explore their passions in this area, but also make sure they get to know all that the University of Michigan has to offer.

Activities will include off-campus excursions, faculty and executive mentoring sessions, alumni networking, community service opportunities, business day-treks, and more.

Why You Should Apply

You should consider applying to live in the Living Business Community if you’re excited about the prospect of deeply embedding yourself into the idea that business can be a positive force for the world.

You should consider applying if you’d relish the opportunity to get to know 30 of your Ross classmates on a more personal level and get a headstart on creating your network of peers and support.

You should consider applying if you want to live in one of the best residence halls on campus.

I guess I shouldn’t call that an official endorsement, but I’ve heard West Quad is a great place for first-year students. I’ve never lived there myself (they don’t let ‘old guys’ in), but students I’ve talked to say it’s one of the residence halls people hope they get placed into.

The building is very centrally located to academic buildings and downtown locations. And it’s modern, with amenities students love, like group work spaces, a community kitchen, a creative suite, among other perks.

The incredible living learning experience should be more than enough to sway you into wanting to be a part of it, but if you need a little more motivation, surely the chance to live in the most coveted residence hall is a bonus.

How To Apply

If you’ve been admitted to the Ross BBA program, you’ll receive the University Housing application via your umich email. Simply select “Living Business” in that application and complete the additional Theme Community application.

On this additional application you’ll be asked to answer three questions:

  • Why do you want to be a part of the Living Business Theme Community?
  • How would you build a better world through business and positive leadership?
  • What motivates you to contribute to a community of learners?

When we evaluate applications, we’ll be looking for people who were honest and thoughtful about this opportunity and excited about the experiences they’ll have and the connections they’ll make during their first year as Michigan Ross BBAs.

I hope this gave you a little bit of insight into the new Living Business Theme Community available at Michigan Ross, and gave you the nudge necessary for you to apply. You won’t regret it.
